DNA stands for deoxyribonucleic acid. It is a chemical made up of two long molecules, arranged in a spiral. We refer to this as the double-helix structure.
DNA carries genetic information and is unique. Because it is unique, the ability to examine DNA found at a crime scene is a very useful forensic tool. The common methods used to identify and describe the DNA profile includes – Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) and Short tandem repeat profiling (STR).
DNA is not just used in the field of Forensics but also in:
Bio-informatics
Pharmacology
Nano-technology
Archaeology
Anthropometry
