Novel ini telah mengkritik adat di Minangkabau pada ketika itu yang menjadikan darjat dan keturunan sebagai perkara yang besar sehingga memutuskan hubungan antara dua jiwa, digambarkan melalui watak Zainuddin dan Hayati.

Zainuddin, lelaki yang tidak punya apa-apa. Harta tidak, rupa tidak, cinta pun kosong. Pada ketika bertemu Hayati, Zainuddin mula sedar, yang harta itu boleh dicari, rupa itu boleh diterima seadanya, dan cinta, adalah satu anugerah Tuhan.

Datangnya cinta itu sebagai satu anugerah, dan perginya ia adalah satu bencana. Haryati terpaksa menikah bukan dengan dia. Patah hati Zainuddin. TIME TO HEAL

He needed to be strong; for others. Hassan learnt about death at a young age. It was death that made him decide to be in the medical field.
